  1. Access your M-Pesa menu
  2. Select Lipa na M-PESA
  3. Select “Pay Bill”
  4. For Business no enter Kenya Power’s Lipa na M-PESA PayBill Number 888880
  5. For Account no enter your Kenya Power Prepaid Meter Number (e.g. 1234 5678 910)
  6. Enter Amount“, between Ksh100 and 35,000 and press “OK”
  7. Input your M-Pesa PIN
  8. Confirm the details are correct and press OK
  9. You will receive a confirmation SMS from M-PESA and KPLC will generate a prepaid token valid for your meter and send via SMS.
  10. Enter this code in your KPLC tokens meter and confirm. Your tokens will be instantly loaded

Meanwhile, Equity Bank has been making major moves to offer Kenyans alternatives to M-Pesa through its highly effective mobile banking system bolstered by their own Sim Card Equitel. Among the many things you can do with Equitel, you can buy KPLC tokens

How to Buy Tokens through Equitel

  1. Go to Equitel menu
  2. Select Eazzy Pay
  3. Select Pay Bill.
  4. Select the bank account number to pay from e.g. 0123456789102
  5. Select business number
  6. Choose KPLC Tokens
  7. Enter your KPLC Prepaid Meter Number (e.g. 1234 5678 910) press OK
  8. Enter the amount you wish to pay which should be between Ksh. 100 and Ksh. 500,000.
  9. Enter your Equitel PIN and press OK
  10. Confirm details are correct and press OK
  11. You will receive a text confirmation of the transaction from Equity bank. KPLC will then generate prepaid token valid for your meter.
  12. Enter this code in your KPLC tokens meter and confirm. Your tokens will be instantly loaded

Besides the tokens system, KPLC also has an effective postpaid system that is used by a considerable number of customers especially companies, businesses, and institutions which consume more electricity than households.

This method, however, necessitates a KPLC staff to visit a premise and disconnect a customer from the grid if they fail to pay for electricity. You can pay for KPLC postpaid bill using either Safaricom or Equitel.

How to pay your Postpaid Electricity Bill with M-Pesa

  1. Go to the M-Pesa menu.
  2. Select Pay Bill
  3. Enter the Kenya Power Postpaid business number 888 888.
  4. Enter your Kenya Power account number e.g. 123456.
  5. Enter the amount between Ksh. 100 and Ksh. 35,000.
  6. Enter your M-Pesa PIN.
  7. Confirm that all details are correct.
  8. You will receive a confirmation of the transaction via SMS.

How to pay your Electricity Bill with Equitel

  1. 1 Go to Equitel menu
  2. Select Eazzy Pay
  3. Select Pay Bill.
  4. Select the bank account number to pay from e.g. 0123456789102
  5. Select business number
  6. Choose KPLC Bills (Post Paid)
  7. Enter your KPLC Kenya Power meter number e.g. 2831172 or 3436980 and press OK
  8. Enter the amount you wish to pay which should be between Ksh. 100 and Ksh. 500,000.
  9. Enter your Equitel PIN and press OK
  10. Confirm details are correct and press OK.
  11. You will receive a text confirmation of the transaction from Equity bank.

All payments are posted in your electricity account on the same day.

Failing to pay your postpaid KPLC bills diligently will necessitate disconnection from the grid and for you to have access to electricity again you will have to pay a reconnection fee.

Besides using Safaricom and Equitel, you can pay for your bills through over the counter services and ATMs in various banks. These banks include; Family Bank, Diamond Trust Bank, Citibank, Equity Bank, Co-operative Bank, Postbank, Stanbic Bank, I&M Bank, Standard Chartered Bank, and National Bank of Kenya.

  8. Enter the token number in your meter to recharge your tokens.

How to pay KPLC postpaid Bill through PesaPal

  1. Go to M-Pesa Menu
  2. Select Pay Bill
  3. Enter Business No. 220220
  4. Enter Account No. KPLC1234567-89 (KPLC and your meter number)
  5. Enter the Amount
  6. Enter your M-Pesa PIN then send
  7. You will receive a confirmation message and your KPLC account will be updated with the latest payment soon enough.

If you want to buy KPLC tokens online or pay for KPLC postpaid bill online, then you need to access the Pesapal online portal. This portal provides several payments means including; Visa Card, MasterCard, and Airtel Money

How to buy KPLC tokens online or pay for KPLC postpaid bill online

  1. Access Tokens Pesapal Portal
  2. Select whether Prepaid (for tokens) or Postpaid (for KPLC Bill)
  3. Fill in the form correctly
  4. Proceed to pay
  5. Select payment method and follow the specific instructions to complete the payment
  6. Once you pay, you should get confirmation messages on your phone depending on whether you were buying tokens of paying the KPLC bill.

What if during the process of buying tokens or paying your bill through any of the methods mentioned above you accidentally pay for a wrong account number? Can you get your money back? Can the tokens be transferred to your correct account number?

Well yes!

How to reverse KPLC tokens or payments.

First, contact KPLC through social media (Facebook or Twitter) preferably KPLC Customer Care Twitter Handle. Send them a message with the details of the transactions including;

  • Name
  • Phone Number
  • Payment confirmation Message
  • The Account number or Meter Number you wanted to pay for

KPLC customer service representatives should respond to you as soon as possible and help you recover your tokens or payments.

The refund will be initiated within a couple of days. This is a less convenient and cumbersome procedure but it’s worth the wait. Usually, you should repay for tokens with the correct details and go on with life as you wait for KPLC to tender on your issue.

Get OKOA tokens

KPLC and Safaricom partnered up in 2015 to provide both prepaid and postpaid customers with power access in case of a blackout when financially tight. The services are given in the form of loans between Ksh 100 and Ksh 2000 with a 7 days deadline of repayment and an interest rate of 10%.

To access these services, you need to register for OKOA Stima as follows

  1. Dial *885# (Safaricom)
  2. Accept OKOA Stima terms and conditions.
  3. Provide National ID number
  4. Set up your preferred PIN and confirm
  5. After you have received a confirmation message via SMS, select continue.
  6. Enter your Service PIN
  7. Select register meter/account and select “Register Now.”
  8. Choose your account type, either Pre-paid or Post-paid
  9. Enter the KPLC prepaid meter number or account number for post-pay customers and submit your application.

Now that you have registered, you can get OKOA services easily using the same dial code.

How to get OKOA Tokens

  1. Dial *885# on you Safaricom phone
  2. Enter Service Pin
  3. Select the prepaid account option
  4. Choose the Meter you want to buy the token for
  5. Your M-Pesa account is automatically deducted
  6. You will receive a confirmation message from M-Pesa and Kenya Power about your payment.

To Request for OKOA Stima for Pre-paid Customers

  1. Dial *885# using your Safaricom
  2. Enter Service Pin
  3. Select the prepaid option and then “OKOA Stima.”
  4. Choose the ‘request emergency top-up’ option,
  5. Select Meter
  6. Select the preset OKOA amounts ranging from Ksh 100 to Ksh 1000 and confirm.

To Request OKOA Stima for Post-Pay Customers

  1. Dial *885# using your Safaricom
  2. Enter your Service PIN
  3. Select the post-paid option
  4. Select the type of account you wish to request for a loan, the bill on the account is automatically displayed.
  5. Select Okoa Stima and follow the system prompts.
  6. Choose the ‘request emergency top-up’ option,
  7. Select Meter
  8. Select the preset OKOA amounts ranging from Ksh 100 to Ksh 1000 and confirm.

How to Repay KPLC OKOA Stima Loan?

  1. Dial *885# using your Safaricom
  2. Enter your Service PIN
  3. Select either Pre Paid or Post Paid
  4. Select the registered account
  5. The bill on the account is displayed, Select pay bill via M-Pesa
  6. Select either “pay in full” or “part-payment”
  7. Enter the amount to be paid
  8. Submit

Despite the scandals and critics due to its monopoly, Kenya Power and Lighting Company is constantly looking for better ways to serve its customers efficiently.

The methods listed above my experience delays sometimes but services are delivered and in case the delay prolongs, you can always reach the customer care offices using the social media platforms and contacts.
